Switching Gears: How Driving an EV Feels Like Learning a New Language

Driving to work yesterday, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the conversation we had in the office. A bunch of us, all recent Electric Vehicle (EV) converts, were swapping stories, and one thing became hilariously clear: owning an EV is like stepping into a whole new world where even the language has evolved. Who knew a car could make you feel like you’re relearning basic vocabulary?

Remember when we used to say, “Have you filled gas?” Now it’s all about, “Is the car charged?” ⚡ It’s no longer about half-full tanks or three-quarters; we’re talking percentages now: “My car is at 53%.” It’s like managing the battery on your phone, except this one’s on wheels. And can we talk about how odd it feels to tell someone, “I need to plug in the car”? It sounds like I’m setting up a toaster, not prepping for a commute.

Then there’s the hardware. Hoses for gas have been replaced by cables and adapters. I used to think “fast charging” referred to my phone at an airport lounge. Now, it’s a matter of survival on a road trip. And don’t get me started on levels—Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast chargers. It’s like a secret society with its own hierarchy. I half expect to need a decoder ring to figure it all out.

Speaking of road trips, finding a charging station is a modern-day treasure hunt. Apps galore promise to guide you to the nearest charger, but it’s still hit or miss. Gas stations are on every corner, but chargers? Let’s just say we’re not quite there yet. Hopefully, this infrastructure boom everyone talks about arrives sooner rather than later.

And here’s a question: Do we still call it the gas pedal when it’s not gas that’s propelling the car? Should we rename it the “go pedal” or maybe “the zoom button”?  Okay, that last one might be a bit much, but you get the point.

And no oil changes either—right? Remember that routine every 3 months or 3,000 miles: “You got to get an oil change”? Go sit with the dealer and read some old magazines? Well, that’s gone! Say goodbye to spending your Saturday morning flipping through dusty magazines in a waiting room.

The life of an EV owner also involves negotiating with utility providers for discounts. It’s like haggling at a market, but instead of fruits and veggies, it’s kilowatt-hours. And charging routines? Oh, they’re a thing. Do you charge nightly like you’d tuck in a baby, or just when it’s desperate—like me hunting for my phone charger at 5%? Do you plug it in outside or keep it snug in the garage? It’s a whole lifestyle shift.

Honestly, it feels like having a newborn at home.  You’re constantly monitoring, adjusting, and planning ahead. Instead of diapers and bottles, it’s adapters and charge schedules. And just like new parents, we’re all fumbling our way through, sharing tips, and celebrating small wins (“I made it to work with 2% left!” is our version of a baby’s first smile).

But, jokes aside, it’s exciting to be part of this transition. Sure, there are quirks, and yes, it’s a learning curve. But every time I pass a gas station without stopping, I’m reminded of why it’s worth it. Plus, who doesn’t love the silent hum of an EV gliding through the streets?

So, if you’re considering making the switch, be prepared for a life-changing—and vocabulary-altering—experience. And for those of you already in the club, keep those stories coming. After all, navigating this new world is a lot more fun when we’re all in it together! ⛽
